You hope with all your heart that man will inherit these 'treasures' - and love and cherish them as you have - and pass them on to come to be heirlooms in someone else time far into the future. You hope...but...who knows? Some handcrafts will as a matter of fact survive to this lofty and exalted place...while others will turn up on a rummage sale table...or in a charity shop, to be sold for a 'song'
So which 'treasure' should come first? Maybe my 'Home Sweet Home' - the one that hangs on my Kitchen/Dinette door. Apart from these actual embroidered words, it features an ornately appliquéd and embroidered 'cutesy' house, complete with path and picket fence with flowers. The main house and message are surrounded by many small appliquéd squares with pictures of houses, hearts and flowers. Corny as it may seem, my dear old 1878 farmhouse Is the sweetest Home I have had in my six decades of life, so this 'hanging' Is one of my most meaningful 'treasures'.
Some years ago, when I was a wannabe patchwork quilter, I was given a dear exiguous left-over piece of material with a photo of the two 'Raggedy Ann & Andy' rag dolls, together with the caption -
'Abc - 123 - Fine Friends We'll Be'
It was meant as a custom piece...one to'play with'...and so I did, and stuffed and puffed and detailed sections - and closed it with a calico border and a tiny print edge. I think it has a rustic look...especially as its hanger is a varnished small tree branch from one of our own farm trees.
A fine cross-stitch photo of a bear eating from a jar of honey was a Charity Shop find. I 'rescued' this poor, unloved and unfinished wall hanging, washed it...repaired it...and added a few 'bumble bees' and other adornments. And now it lives on with its 'sweet' message -
'Home is where the Heart is'
The love of all things 'angelic' led me into a few angel wall hangings. One has a cute exiguous caterpillar-like vertebrate with wings, declaring -
'Learn to be your own Free Spirit'
(Took me a while to truly 'get' this, but in my sixth decade, I'm flying high!)
Another has a folk-style angel and hearts and stars, embroidered on calico with a floral 'granny print' material border, and it reminds us that -
'Angels can fly...because they make light of Everything'
It's a great thought...especially when we consider how many doubts and fears we humans allow ourselves to be heavily burdened with. There Is a choice...and it's ours to make.
My largest stitchwork 'creation' is someone else angel themed wall hanging with various sized squares of calico set into a large coloured material surround. It features patterns, and a couple of 'smiley' type faces with wiggly hair and dubious smiles, and one large 'country' angel. Each one is carrying a message -
'The Difficult...done daily',
'The Impossible...performed overnight',
'But Miracles...are by Appointment Only'.
Is there a mum out there who doesn't associate intimately with this one?
The funniest wall hanging - and most unlikely angel - is the appliquéd and embroidered 'bloke' in workman's navy blue singlet and shorts and slippers...and large patterned wings. With unshaven chin and hairy chest, his caption reads -
'Angels Come in all shapes and sizes'
This wall hanging was a 'secret women's business' project, furtively made (over a long and sporadic period of time) for my husband as my gift to him, Christmas 2004. It hangs above his office desk to cheer him up and inspire him!
So...these are a few of my most favourite wall hangings, created with some tears of angst and despair...and many of relief, as each 'project' was completed. I tend to 'gnash teeth' a lot whilst machine-sewing, and the language that flows tends towards the colourful (some may even recommend 'coarse'). Despite all obstacles and odds, each wall hanging has been a labour of love - and all remain a source of much pleasure and pride.
I have come to the place in my mind and heart where I hope (but don't as a matter of fact expect) - that man else will treasure these as I have. Finally, this as a matter of fact matters little. The prominent thing is that I have loved them...and so have those who have shared any part of my world. And that's what as a matter of fact counts.
